Deposits are of two basic types :

bullet

scales

bullet

foulants

Scales are hard, dense, crystalline deposits which are formed by the precipitation of dissolved solids when their solubility limit has been exceeded. Some common scales found in cooling water systems include calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, calcium silicate, and silica.

Foulants, in contrast, are usually softer, non-crystal line deposits which are formed when suspended solids such as silt, dirt, oils, or microbiological slimes settle out or adhere to metal surfaces

Fouling is a result of the accumulation of suspended insoluble material. This material has been created somewhere else and is transfered to the deposition aerea from the water flow.
